The Powassan virus causes inflammation of the brain which has lead to death or permanent disability in 60% of infected cases.
Even more troubling is that this virus can be transmitted from a deer tick to a human in as little as 15 minutes. Much faster than Lyme disease – which takes at least 24hours.
The disease is considered rare but it is also emerging. There have been 8 cases reported in Massachusetts and many more in our other New England states and the Midwest. There are several options for tick control. Please talk to your veterinarian today about which product is right for your pet.
If you are in the MA South Shore area, please visit our clinic at 291 Quincy Ave. No appointment necessary.
