Hi all, it’s hard to believe I’m still getting this question. Yes! It is very important to keep your pets protected from tick borne disease (TBD) ALL YEAR ROUND.
Ticks carry Lyme disease which most people are familiar with. Did you also know that ticks can carry Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis? And these are just the common diseases seen in Massachusetts.
Ticks can also cause Tick paralysis, are the agent of Rocky mountain spotted fever, and cause Bartonellosis and Hepatozoonosis.
Many of you will remember this video of a young girl afflicted with Tick Paralysis:
Indeed, the US Department of Health and Human Services has recently put together a task force to combat tick disease as a serious public health threat. Of note, the brown dog tick can survive indoors potentially causing massive infestations that can take up to 6 months to eradicate. You can read more about that here:
There are several great options to protect your pets and your family from TBDs. You should discuss the purchase of flea and tick preventives with your veterinarian as all products are not created equally. Your veterinarian can help you choose which product is right for your pet.
