November is National Pet Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes in cats and dogs is a complex disease caused by either a lack of the hormone insulin or an inadequate response to insulin. While a diagnosis can be overwhelming and scary at first, it is important to understand that diabetes is considered a very manageable disorder and many diabetic dogs and cats can lead a happy, healthy and virtually normal life.

Some of the main symptoms to watch for are:

  • increased thirst
  • increased urination
  • lethargy
  • increase in appetite
  • sudden weight loss (despite an increase in appetite)

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, please don’t wait to schedule an appointment at VUCC. Early detection is critical to the proper management of pet diabetes and we are happy to help.

In addition to the care and education that we can provide here at VUCC, we have recently teamed up with the Diabetes PetCare Alliance Program. The Diabetes PetCare Alliance was created in 2013 to help raise awareness of pet diabetes. It is a partnership between Merck Animal Health, Zoetis, Nestle Purina PetCare and veterinary professionals across the nation. During the months of November and December, all of our newly diagnosed pets will be eligible to receive a FREE Diabetes Management Kit. Please click on the link below to learn more.
